Collagen and elastin are proteins that provide structure and support for the skin, giving it resiliency and firmness. Hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin, giving it volume. These naturally occurring substances are why youthful skin is firm, supple and smooth. As we age, however, the production of all three diminishes.
In actuality our skin begins aging at puberty, when elastin production drops off. After the age of 40, collagen production begins to slow; our bodies no longer produce collagen quickly enough to replace what is lost. Time simply takes a toll on our skin and we start to see sagging skin and deepening folds.
Juvederm® is a dermal filler made up of hyaluronic acid that can be used to fill in deeper lines and wrinkles such as the parentheses and smile lines around the mouth. Injection with dermal fillers takes about 30 minutes. Results can be seen immediately and can last about 9 – 12 months.
Juvederm® is purchased by the syringe and the number of syringes required is based on the severity of the folds or lines being treated.
Prior to your appointment for Botox® or Juvederm® treatment, it is best to avoid anti-coagulant medications such as aspirin and NSAIDS (e.g.
Motrin, Advil and Aleve) for at least 1 week. If any of these medications are prescribed by your physician DO NOT stop taking them. If, however, the medications are NOT prescribed by your
physician you may stop taking them 1 week prior to your treatment. This is to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding. Certain supplements such as Vit E, Ginko Biloba and Omega-3, also have
anti-coagulant properties and should be avoided as well so long as they are not prescribed by your physician.
